Papa Pasquale Wins Best Animation at CIFF16.

So there was a film festival on the weekend, that was not the Oscars: the Canada Independent Film Festival. My little film, "Papa Pasquale" won an award - Best Animation.

Here's some pictures.

The award was presented to me by this little darling...

 ...which was totally sweet.

I was smiling ALOT. This picture was taken by my friend Julia Chiarella-Genoni AKA Ask Mama Moe. I was really happy because a bunch of my family and friends came out to cheer for me.

Ralph Zarboni came to the screening; it was he who brought me the story of Papa Pasquale (Pat) Folino, and who made the film possible. Awesome.

The award is really quite pretty...crystal. It's heavy...and sharp! Don't drop it on your foot.

This was the inaugural event of the CIFF - Congratulations to them! I'm so honoured; and what a thrill to see one of my films on the big screen.

Comments are here.

#BlogHer13 - Queen Latifah & my VOTY AWARD.

It's only just sinking in that I was selected as a VOTY winner, for my illustrated story "How To Check For Pinworms". In the educational Humor Category, no less.

You guys know what the Voice of the Year Award is, right? It's only like, the Oscars of the blogosphere. One hundred honorees are selected from 2600 submissions; of those, twelve are awarded the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to read their winning blogposts at the BlogHer Community Keynote. I was one of twelve.

If you blog, this is a Big Deal. It is peer recognition, community celebration, and the chance to wear that fancy dress on a stage all rolled into one. There is no prize money or gifts or even a break on the registration fee; it's just honor, plain and simple.

So there I was, massively hungover and knowing I had to get up on a stage and tell 5000+ fellow bloggers a funny story about bumholes and pinworms, (with drawings). And did I mention that Queen Latifah was emceeing the Awards?

We were told to meet at 4:30 in "the greenroom" in the backstage area. Although I felt a bit like death, I somehow managed to arrive on time, but the place was deserted. I asked a non-judgmental hotel security guard for guidance.

She took me behind the stage, past a labyrinth of black gear boxes, cables taped to the floor, and a row of five dudes sitting at tables with laptops and fancy tech stuff with blinking lights. It was all very official back there. It would have been intimidating but I was busy concentrating on surviving my hangover, specifically keeping bodily fluids from leaving without permission.

The security guard put me in a curtained off room. It was nice in there; fresh cut flowers and comfy sofas. I gratefully sank into one, thinking, wow, they're really treating us well! I turned inward to try to focus...

I wasn't really nervous about performing my piece; I use it in one of my lectures about Visual Storytelling and I know how to work it. But the timing of the images has to be perfect or the story falls flat. No one had yet communicated to me if I was going to be able to control this myself with a clicky thing.

As I sat quietly fretting about this, a scary lady with a headset pulled back the curtain and barked, "Who are YOU?!?"

Turns out they'd accidentally put me in Queen Latifah's greenroom. Scary Lady kicked me out.

I thought that sofa was a bit too comfy anyways.

The Readers' greenroom looked like this:

I sat there by myself for fifteen minutes. The other eleven readers joined me, plus the hardworking BlogHer organizers. We were lined up in order on the chairs (I was second). Apparently Queen Latifah was stuck in traffic eating pizza so there was a delay. The energy backstage was a mix of nerves and serenity; women hugged one another, did yoga stretches, and silently practiced their speeches. I was given the clicky thing whereupon my worries about timing my slides dissipated.

Suddenly a gorgeous tall woman in a black and white dress breezed into the backstage area, followed by a couple of 'handlers' and a video cameraman. Everything about her screamed DEAL WITH IT. The star had arrived.

She smiled a zillion watts and said (sic), "How yall doin? My name is Laaaaaa....!"

And my brain went into full *holeefuuuuqQUEENLATIFAHisstandingrightinfrontofme* reverb. I couldn't speak. All I could think of was that I had to take a picture for my mom. I crept forward with my iPhone and turned around so QL was behind me.

My intention was to just get her in the background with my selfie in the foreground. But she saw me doing it.

And the rest is photobomb history.

This gif was SubWOW's idea.

Best hangover cure ever! Armed with a couple of Queen Latifah's sparkles I climbed the stage (without tripping - high-five!) and delivered my story with previously untapped panache. I may have been channeling a mix of Eddie Izzard, Louis CK and Captain Underpants....

Hearing so many people laughing in all the right places was extremely gratifying and I'll never, ever forget it. Afterward, someone mentioned that one person actually couldn't handle the wormy bits and had to walk out. It made me realize how far I'd pushed the limits by winning a VOTY for this story. My pinworms and I trolled the entire audience and all but one made it through.

Doesn't that somehow make it more meaningful?

Thank-you BlogHer, thank-you to the selection committee, and thank-you to everyone who laughed in all the right places, at a story about a little boy with an itchy bum.

Tune in to The Queen Latifah Show.

PickleWeasel EGG Hunt - WINNER.

Sooooooo....time to announce the PickleWeasel EGG Hunt winner. There were 13 entrants who tweeted the magical words,
"The #PickleWeasel app is simply marvelous for comics & drawing. But don't take my word for it - try it yourself. http://itun.es/i6JL3nG"
and took a stab at guessing where the Easter Egg was hidden. I'm shocked at how many of you guessed it was under the Bunny's bum. YOUR MINDS ARE IN THE GUTTER PEOPLE. No, really folks, it was hidden under his tail.

The winner of the contest has been selected by random number generator, number "1" - the first person to tweet the magical words.
And that person is Pickleope. Congratulations Pickleope! Go now to my Zazzle shop and choose something (mug or t-shirt).

I like Pickleope. Not just cuz he shares some freaky DNA with PickleWeasel, but he's also a very funny blogger. I like him cuz he's not afraid to poke at stuff. Like human foibles. Squirm.

Surprize! I decided to throw this drawing in on a whim.

See? You never know when I might do that. I'll bet you're regretting not entering the contest now eh?

Fear not. There will be more contests, with prizes and drawings, and possibly even an iPad mini in the not too distant future.

All because I love you.

I Draw YOU - Maddy.

I get a lot of compliments on my boots. People ask me where I got them, and I tell them the truth:

"I did a drawing of myself riding a Unicorn wearing nothing but these boots. Me, not the Unicorn." True story, right?

So that led to a contest wherein the entrants had to let me know how they'd like to be drawn wearing their dream boots from Country Outfitter. And Maddy won. Which was kinda cool cuz it was her 17th birthday and also she'd just got her license. Triple congrats!!!

Per her wishes, she's wearing Corral Tan Mesquite Laser Harness Boots, in her long knitted sweater and some knitted mittens, and holding a Macbook. She wins this drawing on one of my Zazzle mugs and a $150 gift card from Country Outfitter.

Maddy is a budding animator experimenting with stop motion 'pixelation' - she's made a clever short film called "Magician Maddy and her Favorite Socks". If any of you doubt that you can make your own films, look no further for inspiration, cuz this gal is actually doing it.

Now Maddy, whenever people admire your boots, you can tell them one heck of a long and complicated story.

Kicking Cancer's BUTT.

You guys are amazing. There were a whopping 68 comments on The Supah-Sam Contest!! All to cheer on a little 4 year old boy with leukemia. I'm so proud of you.

So much imagination! There were many fine entries but one truly nailed it:

"Dear anummated laydi, I'm 4 years old, my name is Conners aka @allconsoffun and I want you to draw me beating cancer up with Supah-Sam because cancer is a mean ugly villian!!! Draw me as HALF AS cool as Supah-Sam cuz NOBODY can be as cool as Supah-Sam"

I think this is the drawing we all want to see.

DO NOT FEEL SORRY FOR THE BIG C. Cancer deserves to get it's butt kicked by a couple of four year olds.

Congratulations to Connie! She actually has a t-shirt in real life that says "I fight like a girl". After drawing her as Supah-GRRRL today I noticed she'd been tweeting "GRRRRRRRR" quite a few times. Coinkidink? I think not!

Now listen folks, Connie's mom passed away this morning. I've known Con for two and a half years on Twitter - we bonded over Boobie Wednesday, a campaign to promote self examination and breast cancer awareness. She's a tireless advocate for cancer survival and awareness. I asked her if she was comfortable with this post going up today and she said she was. Her mom was a 3 year cancer survivor herself and a lovely woman who will be missed by many. I know that Connie would be appreciative of any comments and condolences left here.

Take home message...The Supah-Sam Contest was all about boosting morale. Please carry this away with you and pay it forward: hug someone you love, offer a shoulder to lean on, an ear to listen and a kind word. When others are in need, it's important to reach out and respond, in whatever way you can.

Special thank-you's to Sam, Sam's parents, and @JWMoxie The Smartness, who touched me with her story about Sam.

I Draw YOU - @qstreet

This beauty is the wonderful winner of my Couch Potato - Super Spud contest. Her name is Sam Parrotto, but you may know her as @qstreet on Twitter. According to her bio, Sam seeks magic.

But I think magic just found her.

Inspiration for this drawing came from a magical photo of @qstreet by her friend @Jackinessity.

Want to be drawn by me? Subscribe to this blog and don't miss the next contest.

EPIC Marty.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, here's the Grand Prize Winner of The Most EPIC Contest Evar - Marty, AKA @pilot2b.

His entry was challenging: "HOW to draw me... on a motorcycle with wings, with scuba gear on, jumping over an 18-wheeler, about to land in water next to a nuclear power plant. Easy enough."

Are we almost ready for another contest...?

Chocolate AND Chippendales.

"You should draw me with a chocolate smeared face surrounded by two (not one but two!) hott guys! Preferably naked. Or not. But they must be hott."

This was @EllieM72's inspired  Second Prize winning entry in The Most EPIC Contest Evar. Originally these dudes were starkers (all danglies tastefully hidden though). But when Ellie first saw the art, she had a sudden realization.

"Oh dang it. Was gonna order mugs but how do I explain two naked guys to my girls?? :( crap"

So I covered them up with a cliché. Which only makes this drawing all the more amusing.

Don't you love watching bicycles go backwards?

SURFING The Laundry WAY.

We've all faced the never-ending laundry pile, right? Ugh.
But sometimes mindless chores can relax the brain and give way to beautiful images...a bit like meditation. Or hallucination, depending on how much laundry there is, heheh.

Winning Third Prize in The Most EPIC Contest Evar, gifted photographer Karin Hedetniemi wrote: "You should draw me as a girl surfing a galaxy ... a sparkling, mini galaxy. Because once I saw one while I was absently folding laundry." So here she is surfing the Laundry WAY, which is a bit like the Milky WAY, but without the milk. @karinhedet wins a t-shirt with this drawing on it and my thanks for her inspirational entry.

Do you ever see magic in the mundane?

YOU. @jillsmo

Here's the winner of the Feeling LUCKY contest, @jillsmo ...!

You prolly know her as a stick drawing on twitter and her "Yeah. Good Times." blog. And she claims (rather defiantly I might add) that no actual photos exist of her other than a very interesting one of her in college. So here we have a stick drawing ...of a stick drawing!

If you wanna know what the heck "POOP DECK!" is all about, just crawl around on her blog. You may actually find yourself rolling on the floor laughing before you find it, cuz she's hella-funny! And don't let the snark fool you; she's a real softie-mom of two (one autistic) beautiful boys.

Feeling LUCKY - WINNER.

That was fun. 57 comments and a total of 54 entries all in a matter of half a day. I can see you guys like the whole "I Draw YOU" idea. And that's a good thing too., cuz no one guessed the actual number, so not only am I going to DRAW the winner, I also had to DRAW the winner.

There were:

"But why 61, JC? WHY?!?"

Cuz. That's all that would fit. Obviously.

Count them! Oh yeah and there was only:

To DRAW the winner, I gave each entry a number from 1 to 54 and got my Random Number Generator (AKA the 11 year old Boy) to choose one.

He chose number 48! Congratulations @jillsmo!! And by the way, her guess was "0" heh, heh.

Hey wait a minute. She's already a stick figure. So should I draw the real life Jillsmo? Or should I draw the stick figure Jillsmo? Remember, I'm drawing her wearing the Leprechaun's lucky hat.

Go see how that drawing turned out.
