The 17 Year Old Girl.

Our middle child is seventeen today. She's finishing high school this year and has her college applications in.

The girl asked for Doc Martens as a birthday present.

The perfect boots for walking into the future...

Happy Birthday, our talented, funny, smart and powerful ginger. And remember that even as the snowmen bow down before you, you will always be my baby.

Love, Mum.

The DOLL.

This story originally appeared on Aiming Low.

When our first baby was born, the stars twinkled and all the flowers bloomed. It was spring and we were blown away. We were in love, we had cool hair...and a brand new daughter.

The infant girl was perfect. I dressed her up in old fashioned baby clothes, kinda vintage, with lace dresses and Victorian bonnets. She never cried, except when she wanted my milk. I used to joke that “sleeping like a baby” actually meant “waking up every two hours”. Ha. Ha. Ha.

After two months of Sleepus Interruptus, reality kicked in. Life as we knew it was OVER. Forget about cool hair.

We were living in London at the time, and it happened that we drove down to Penzance in Cornwall to visit my mother-in-law. One evening, The Huz suggested we go out to the pub and have a civilized pint. I wanted to go …but I couldn’t leave my baby alone with anyone, not even my MIL. I just wasn’t ready yet. So we decided to see if the pub would let us in with our baby.

Out we went with our tiny daughter in her pram. She’d just been fed so she was quietly blissed out.

We walked along until we came to a really nice old pub called The Admiral Benbow. And in we went with the pram. The barman marched right up to us and said we couldn’t come into the pub with a baby. The Huz looked him right in the eye and said,

“That’s not a baby. That’s a doll.”

The two men stared at one another.

The Huz raised one of his eye brows.

The barman glanced down at the pram.

What he saw was a Victorian bonnet with tiny silken eyelashes resting on a pink porcelain cheek, perfect rosebud lips mutely dream-sucking, and an impossibly dimpled hand on the lace blanket.

He looked back up at me, my mother-in-law and The Huz and said,

“What a beautiful doll. Please have a seat.”

Judge me if you want, but I'm sure a fair number of you have snuck your baby into a pub.

Party FOOD.

The 15 year old girl will soon be 16.

In case you were wondering what kind of party food would be appropriate to serve at a Sweet 16 party, one of my daughter's friends made some suggestions on FaceBook.

I hafta say, the celery kinda surprised me.  Celery is a ninja.

On Friday night this place will be crawling with starving teenagers. Any advice?

My Mom.

I don't always draw stick figures...sometimes I like to sketch. This is a drawing of my mom.

We went on a little trip together, just mom and me, in Philadelphia. I looked after her a bit, and even though I'm now fifty, she cuddled me and said I was still her baby...

My mom is the one who encouraged me to draw when I was little. The story goes that when I was two, she tried to draw on my drawing; apparently I grabbed the crayon out of her hand and pushed her away.

It's been three months since my Grandmother died. We mustn't hesitate to spend time with those we love.

Parenting TEENAGERS.

Parenting teenagers is hard. But I was lucky; just before our eldest hit puberty, my friend Shelagh gave me some advice. "They can be horrible," she said, "but don't take any of it personally". This has helped me weather what I thought were some pretty difficult times with our first daughter.

However our second daughter didn't just hit puberty - she beat the living crap out of it, knocked it unconscious, and dragged it into her teen-cave. She owned it. Last week was especially, er... eventful, and The Huz and I were close to cracking. Another friend, Sarah, recommended this book: "Get Out Of My Life, but first could you drive me and Cheryl to the mall?", by Anthony E. Wolf, Ph. D.

 I began to read...

Somewhere in the deep, dark, and dangerous recesses of her teen-cave, the 15 year old girl knows that we love and care for her enough to cry ourselves to sleep. And even buy a book.

And to her baby self, this is AWESOME.

I think that we're gonna make it. It's not easy; we must let our teens go and simultaneously set boundaries for them. However unpleasant, it is probably normal for them to behave badly, call us names and refuse to listen. We stay strong and do our best to follow Shelagh's advice. For as much as our teens complain about the boundaries, they do kind of appreciate them. Even if it only indicates that we love and care.

Oh and the book is great.

No means NO.

Last week, we got the dreaded phone call from the high school. Our fifteen year old daughter had been in an accident.

Seems she was just on her way to class, when a friend approached her in the hall.

He went to pick her up. She said "No".

But he continued.......and lost his balance.

She landed on her head, twisting her neck. He then fell backwards onto her.

Our daughter said she remembered saying "no" and then finding herself on the floor, unable to stand. She couldn't remember how she got there. We took her straight to hospital. Luckily, she "only" had a mild concussion and a wrenched neck. But she had to miss school and man, was she pissed about that!

It could have been so much worse...

My intention here is not to demonize the friend; he's genuinely sorry. But I'd like to use this story to open up a discussion about boundaries, respect for personal space, and the meaning of the word "no". When a person says "no" why doesn't it matter? No means NO.

Have you had an experience where your personal space was not respected?

I drew this one on the go, in Paper, on my iPad.

I love you MORE than beer.

...continued from here.

"I love you more than Twitter!!"

No sooner had the words left my mouth, than The Huz appears at the boy's bedroom door. He looks at me surrounded by all three kids on the boy's bed and says, "did I hear correctly? You love us 'more than Twitter'?"

I nod solemnly. "I knew it! I knew it" yells the 11 year old boy bouncing up and down. "Dad! Dad! Tell us how much you love us?!" His teenaged sisters toss their hair and look annoyed.

The Huz thinks carefully. He strokes his chin and answers, "I love you more than coffee, more than tea, more than wine, more than bacon, more than chocolate, and definitely MORE than Twitter."

I roll my eyes, "yeah, yeah, but how much is that?"

And he says:

And here's the mug to prove it!

Get it NOW, for the one you love, cuz Valentine's Day is coming.

Love someone more than beer? I gots more love mugs in my Zazzle Shop.

I love you MORE than Twitter.

It's bedtime. Both the 11 year old boy and his 14 year old sister stare at me in shock.

"You love us more than chocolate?!?" Hearing the word chocolate, the 17 year old daughter appears at the door. "Did someone say "chocolate"?" she asks.

The 14 year old pipes up, "yeah, apparently she love us more than coffee, more than tea, more than wine, more than bacon, and more than chocolate. Still don't know how much that is though."

The boy is squirming around on his bed as his sisters make themselves comfortable. He's getting all excited so he shouts "MOM how much do you love us?!?"

And I shout back:

And here's the mug to prove it.

Get it NOW, for the one you love, cuz Valentine's Day is coming.

Love someone more than bacon? I gots more love mugs in my Zazzle Shop. Oh and there's 25% off sale. Yay!

The FirstBORN Graduates.

Ticking off the milestones, in this case, the 17 year old daughter's High School Graduation Ceremony. I was sitting in the auditorium, with all the other parents. The students started filing in. My camera was all charged up and ready. Then it wouldn't turn on. I realized I wasn't going to get any photos of the entire event.

I admit I sobbed like a big baby, which I would have done anyway. My mascara didn't stand a chance....

Good thing I know how to draw.

She got her diploma and an Award in Current Events. She also had the recognition of her peers for math, since she organized study groups and helped many other students to learn math. My heart is bursting and I'm so proud of my girl!

What milestones have your little ones passed?

Class of '11 - High School MUSIC Video.

Tomorrow our daughter graduates from high school.

My 17 year old played me a song these three friends of hers had done on their iPhone with Ladida. I was immediately struck by the words "we'll be kids forever"... I'm like, this is loaded with school spirit! It's like ...an anthem. I simply had to animate the music video.

The guys came round and re-recorded the song at our place. The Huz laid down the backing tracks and produced the music. He's played with a few talented peeps like Seal, and Fatboy Slim so he knows his stuff. The original song was rebuilt with some groove.

The daughter photographed and organized and critiqued every step of the way. She's already an awesome slave driver producer. And I have to thank the guys, Buddha, Zac and Joey, for allowing me to back their amazing song with animation.

Best wishes to all the Graduates of 2011!!

Chipmunk CHEEKS.

The sixteen year old daughter has had her wisdom teeth extracted. She was actually born with a very small mouth...and very big teeth. All in all, this kid has had EIGHT adult teeth removed just to make room. That's a quarter of her teeth!! The mind boggles.

She's been very brave. Normally she looks like a manga character; huge eyes, small mouth (like I said), heart shaped face. But today, she looks like a ChipMUNK. I drew this to make her smile, cuz I'm her mom.

Will the kind and generous ToothFAIRY leave her some money? Yes.

Will it be enough to pay for all these extractions and braces and retainers?  Uh....no.

Oh WACOM....can you hear me?

ANATOMY - The 14 Year Old Girl.

I'm now the proud mother of a fourteen year old girl. Except she's waaaaaay older than that. Indeed, my second child is one of those "old souls". She was born wise.

But she's still only 14 and I'm her mother *ahem*. I'm happy to tell you she agrees that this is what the inside of her head looks like right at this moment. Ha.

For the record, she's only just been allowed on FaceBook. We're all expecting ... hoping ... ...PRAYING the pie slice will shrink to a 'healthy' level soon, allowing more focus on studies, chores, family time and the word "whatever".

So what does the inside of your teenager's head look like?

Letting GO.

My big grownup 16 year old daughter left for the UK last week. She's going to visit her Granny for three weeks, and it's her first big trip all by herself.

We drove her to the airport and off she went.

I'm very proud of her. And I miss her.

The SnowFLAKE & The FAKE Santa.

And now for the fourth and final Christmas toon. Drumroll please...!

About ten years ago, my 95 year old grandmother gave us this wind-up Santa Claus toy. She dug it out of some church basement somewhere and she was most likely convinced it would entertain and delight the multitudes.

She was wrong. Until now.

Yes, until now, this Santa has made me want to Crush, Kill and Destroy. Annihilate. Exterminate. Obliterate. Reduce to Rubble. But I showed restraint and I'm kinda glad I did. Because the Santa toy now stars alongside my little SnowFLAKE. I am all powerful.

Disclaimer:
The Santa in this video is a fake Santa. No real Santa's were harmed during the making of this video. No elves were harmed either. Or reindeer.

I did stay up all night finishing it though...

I made this for you, and I made it with love. I want nothing in return.
All good wishes from the now very sleepy JC. Don't wake me up until Boxing Day.

The SnowFLAKE & The Christmas Tree.

This Christmas series is fun for all ages heh heh.

Sometimes I get waaaay too busy with work (you know, animation for MONEY instead of bloggy LOVE) and I just don't have time for my characters. They come knocking at my door, wanting me to animate them, wondering why I've been ignoring them...making me feel guilty with the big, sad eyes. Yeesh.

*Sigh*...I guess my SnowFLAKE can take care of her self....*sob* ...so who needs me...?

The SnowFLAKE & The Chimney.

Here's some more Christmas funny. I get a big kick out of making my kids laugh with my animation. Maybe it's cuz they're my kids, but it's not so easy to get a belly laugh and they never fake it just to be nice.

My thirteen year old daughter is especially tough. If I can make her laugh? It's a WIN.

She never saw the surprise ending coming. How do you make your kids laugh?
